The traditional way to become a LIC agent directly with the company

  • Eligibility requirements to become an LIC agent

    To become an LIC agent, you need to be:

    • At least 18 years old
    • Class 10th passout if you are from a rural area or a Class 12th pass out if you are from urban India.

    If you fulfil both these eligibility criteria, you can proceed with the steps to become an LIC agent.


  • Process of becoming a LIC agent:

    The steps to becoming a LIC agent include the following –

    • Firstly, you need to contact the branch manager (BM) or the development officer (DO) of LIC with your proposal to become an LIC agent.
    • The branch manager (BM) or the assistant branch manager (AMB) or the development officer (DO) of LIC of India would conduct an interview to assess whether you are fit to act as an LIC agent
    • If you fulfil the basic eligibility criteria of becoming an LIC agent and have the zeal to sell life insurance policies, you would have to register for the IRDAI exam, IC 38
    • After registration, you would be sent to LIC’s divisional office or training centre where you would have to undergo an IRDAI (Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority of India) mandatory prescribed insurance agent training for 25 hours
    • After the training is completed, you would have to appear for an examination conducted by the IRDAI (Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority of India) on the given date and venue
    • You would have to pass the IC38 examination with at least 40% marks to qualify as an LIC agent
    • Once you clear the examination, you would be given an Appointment Letter and a license to work as a LIC agent

After getting a license to sell insurance policies, it is not definite that you can become a “successful” LIC agent. There is a lot of effort and perseverance needed to succeed in the business of selling life insurance policies.
